That style always works for me, and I'm a chick. :)
But in all seriousness, it depends if you want to do your hair every day, or just rush out the door each morning. You could grow it out and make it look shaggy, but with thick hair, you might want it a little shorter.
I've never actually done this, but go with the other girls decision of the short, choppy layers. Sounds cool to me.
